Study the field of chemistry, which is the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances. A key component of the study of chemistry is the study of atoms, which are the building blocks of all chemical substances. The periodic table is a visual display of the chemical elements, which are arranged by atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties.

There are five main branches of chemistry: analytical chemistry (which identifies and measures the physical and chemical properties of substances), physical chemistry (which studies how matter and energy interact, with thermodynamics and quantum mechanics being two important branches), organic chemistry (which specifically studies compounds that contain the carbon element), inorganic chemistry (the study of materials such as metals and gases that don’t contain the carbon element), and biochemistry (the study of chemical processes that occur within living organisms). 

There are many fields of study within these five categories, including food chemistry, environmental chemistry, agricultural chemistry, chemical engineering, geochemistry, and forensic chemistry.
